As we look back on the year 2016, it’s important to remember what we’ve gained this year. But also, it’s important to remember who we lost. So here, we offer our thoughts about some of the most important people that passed away this year.

Alan Rickman (1946-2016)

2016 started off with a bang by slapping us in the face with the death of none other than the great Alan Rickman. Rickman, 69, spent most of his adult life as an actor, both on the stage and on the screen. He is best known for his role as Severus Snape in the popular Harry Potter film series adaptations. On her Twitter account, author of the Harry Potter series J. K. Rowling memorialized the actor by saying “There are no words to express how shocked and devastated I am to hear of Alan Rickman’s death. He was a magnificent actor & a wonderful man.”

Muhammad Ali (1942-2016)

Nicknamed “The Greatest”, Muhammad Ali was tragically taken from the world in early June. Born Cassius Clay, Ali was a 3-time world champion boxer who changed the face of the sport, becoming not only a well-liked athlete but also an icon. His confidence in himself became legendary, as he said once “I am the greatest. I said that even before I knew I was.” He leaves behind an inspirational legacy as one fueled by his passionate drive to be nothing short of incredible.

Harambe (1999-2016)

Arguably the greatest loss of the year was my homeboy Harambe the Gorilla. Harambe was unfortunately assassinated in the defense of a small child who was carelessly allowed to fall into Harambe’s enclosure at the Cincinnati Zoo. However, the nation united in the memory of the gorilla, constantly remembering him through hilarious internet memes. This celebration of Harambe’s life was not appreciated by all, as the taunts from the people eventually caused the Cincinnati Zoo to shut down their Twitter account. Rest well, Harambe, and just know that we will never stop loving you.

Or your memes.
