According to “History of Bingham High School,” by Scott Crump, on Bingham’s website, “The student newspaper began publication in 1919.” The school paper has gone through many names, starting with the Apocalypse, the Arrow, Coppertonian, Hi-Lights and then finally the name The Prospector. The Prospector has been around for decades covering many news stories, and events going on at Bingham and is a great part of miner history.
The Advisor for The Prospector is Emily Hills. Hills keeps the staff on track and teaches many things the staff needs to know about news writing.
According to Aubrie Hickmon, News editor, “It’s a way for you to choose what you want to do; you get to choose the articles you write and it’s a way for me to get involved. I also feel like it has made me more outgoing,” said Hickmon. The Prospector is a great way to get involved in the school; it teaches you how to interview, and how to write news stories.
According to Kylee Rasmussen, Sports Editor “I enjoy it because you make a ton of friends. It’s a great way to get involved in the school, and the students in this class build each other up and help each other out.” The school paper is a great way to get involved and express yourself, as well as make friends, and learn good writing skills.
