This Year’s Christmas List

Thanksgiving has come and gone, and many people have been listening to Christmas music for some time now. Whether you enjoy the classics, carols, hymns, or even the catchy new pop songs, chances are that you’ve succumbed to the blessed virus that is the Christmas spirit. Here are some of my personal favorite Christmas songs in no particular order, along with a few that I simply do not enjoy.
Great Holiday Songs

1. Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas

This is one of my favorite Christmas songs due to its relaxing melody and overall tone. Colbie Caillat adds her own personal twist in her cover of this song, and her version is my favorite.

2. Winter Wonderland

This Christmas song does a good job of being fun without being annoying. I enjoy Jason Mraz’s cover.

3. White Christmas

A Christmas classic, this song is sure to get you excited for the holidays. Otis Redding performs a somewhat different version that I enjoy.

4. O Holy Night

This is a song that I love hearing at any time during the Christmas season. Collin Raye gives a passion-filled rendition of this classic tune.

5. Let It Snow

This song definitely brings the Christmas feeling, especially when it’s given a classy touch by Dean Martin.

6. Mary, Did You Know?

This song is full of passion and spine-tingling chords, which is what draws me to it. Kenny Rogers and Wynonna Judd sing a great version of this relaxing song.

7. Silver Bells

‘Silver Bells’ just puts me in the Christmas spirit, and it has a catchy tune to go along with it. My favorite version is done by Elvis Presley.

8. O, Come All Ye Faithful

This is one of my favorite hymns, and easily one of my favorite Christmas songs. David Archuleta’s version is the one I’d listen to around the holidays.

9. God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen

This song is uplifting, joyful, and simply fun to listen to. Barenaked Ladies and Sarah McLachlan do an especially good mash-up cover with We Three Kings.

10. Carol of the Bells

‘Carol of the Bells’ is simply exciting and epic no matter how it is played or who it is played by. Pentatonix does a great cover of this song.

Bad Christmas Tunes

1. Christmas Song

This song by Alvin and the Chipmunks brings back painful memories for many Bingham students due to its excessive playing time at the school during December of 2010 and 2011. The repetitive tune and outrageously annoying singing voices makes this song unbearable.

2. I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas

A hippopotamus? Really? Who asks for a hippo for Christmas? I don’t feel the need to say more, other than mention the irritating tune…

3. Grandma Got Ran Over By a Reindeer

This is horribly gruesome concept, and it’s made even worse by the fact that nobody seems to care! The grandson doesn’t seem too beat up, and Grandpa’s just been “watchin’ football, drinkin’ beer, and playin’ cards”. Not exactly something a grieving husband would do…

4. Last Christmas

This is a song that I immediately turn off upon hearing on the radio. Other than the song being set during Christmas, there is nothing remotely holiday about it.

5. Deck the Halls

This song is simply loud and obnoxious, especially when sung by carolers. Call me Scrooge, but I would gladly shut the door in some faces if those faces were belting this song out.

6. We Wish You a Merry Christmas

This song is almost as annoying as ‘Deck the Halls’…in fact, for a description, just refer to the one above.

7. I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus

I always imagine this song being sung by a whiny eight year old…

8. 12 Days of Christmas

Absurd presents in bizarre numbers and set to an aggravating tune…this song has it all.

9. Up On The Housetop

While it is obviously meant to be childish, this song is too much so for my liking.

10. Mistletoe

Justin Bieber’s 2011 holiday album sent teenage girls into a frenzy, and no song on the record was more appealing than ‘Mistletoe’. However, I have difficulty accepting it as a Christmas song; catchy as its tune is, the song doesn’t feel Christmassy and should have been released as a regular pop song.
Again, neither list is in any particular order, though I did purposely put a few of my least favorite songs at the top of the ‘naughty’ list. I realize that not everybody shares my opinion, but, as Christmastime is all about forgiveness, I suppose I can overlook our potentially differing views. However, if you listen to Alvin and the Chipmunks for enjoyment, I might just have to run you over with a reindeer…
