From heavy medal to underground rap, everyone has a favorite genre. But do people even like the songs, or do they just have a good toon and beat?

People typically like certain songs and artists because they speak to them or send a message that they can understand.  “Music affects deep emotional centers in the brain, “ says Valorie Salimpoor, a neuroscientist at McGill University who studies the brain on music. “A single sound tone is not really pleasurable in itself; but if these sounds are organized over time in some sort of arrangement, it’s amazingly powerful.” Honestly, a lot of people don’t even listen to the words of songs; they just like to bop. As an avid rap listener, I can say that most of they time I just like the beat so I have the song on repeat.

Music nowadays has the same trend: sex, money, drugs, and the occasional love story. A lot of artists appear to not even have morals anymore. In Welcome To The Party by various artists, Lil’ Pump says that he has our “grandma sellin’ crack.” But in Arms Around You he’s singing about how he wants to be with this girl. Don’t get me wrong, they’re still good (not that I’m implying that Lil’ Pump isn’t), like all these musical artists that are trying to spread social or political problems in there songs. The rapper Dax telling everyone that they need to love themselves and Logic saying that racism needs to become extinct.

Looking back in the past, there has always been those artists that sing about those kind of things. And there always will be; so when we think about it, there’s really nothing to complain about. The main difference in music today and past music is that today’s beats are more bangers than they ever have been.

The moral is that in today’s society everybody is different, and everybody likes different music. But I think that we can all agree that when we ask if our music is trash or cash: We’re making bank.
