Lights, camera, action! As you sit in the auditorium and watch the musical, think to yourself, how does this all happen? Behind the scenes, Bingham’s stage tech program does a lot for the events that go on here. As a class offered during the school year, many students are involved with stage tech. Students get taught how to run the show, do lighting, and work with props and costumes.
Les Misérables here at Bingham will start showing in November. Students are involved as the actors and singers, as well as creating the sets and lighting the show. There are nearly 150 students who are actors, as well as 60 who are in stage tech. Bridget Good, who is a senior here at Bingham as well as the head tech manager says that “there are actually a lot of people in stage tech. We just don’t get recognized much so people don’t know.”
Stage tech is offered as a class during first and fifth period and many students take it to learn more about lighting, more about set building, or even just to be in a good space. Bridget also commented how everyone gets along and helps support each other, curating a positive and uplifting environment.
Through stage tech, students have the chance to learn about and participate in many different areas through the preparation and showing of Lés Miserables. Students can learn about making costumes, doing hair and makeup, as well as lighting and props, and how managing all of it works. They also spend time in class building the sets, learning how to properly build things with different materials and tools, and painting and moving around set pieces.
