Minerettes
Bingham Minerettes are hungry again this year for yet another national title. This year’s seniors have been national champions for both their sophomore and junior years as Minerettes, and they do not plan on changing that winning streak.
The Minerettes practice before and after school, and it is not uncommon for a Saturday practice to take up to eight hours.
“We practice a lot, but we are just willing to do whatever it takes,” said Minerette senior, Cassie Robinson.
The Minerettes have won countless state and national titles, but it is not as easy as they make it look.
“Becoming national champions has taken a lot of dedication,” said Robinson, “It doesn’t just happen, you have to put in the work.”
With all the time spent practicing and competing together, it is no surprise that the Minerette team made up of 32 girls has a sisterly bond that cannot be broken.
“We’re literally always together. We have each other’s backs and we are all best friends,” said Minerette senior, Savannah Morris.
The Minerettes compete in three to four different categories: military, dance routine, character/kick and occasionally hip-hop. Their dances are choreographed by the Minerette coaches and sometimes by special guests who are brought in, like a BYU Cougarette.
“This year I love competing in dance routine, because I really like this year’s dance routine called ‘What a Feeling’. It is more lyrical and slower than what we usually do,” said Morris, “But I also love character because it’s fun to get in character with all the makeup.”
In order to make Bingham’s drill team, girls have to go through a very difficult and nerve racking tryout process. There are two rounds of cuts, and if you make it to the second round you have to memorize a given dance routine and perform in front of a panel of judges.
The Bingham Minerettes will soon be entering the final stages of their competition season, where they will compete at region, state, and nationals. The Minerettes know what it takes to win state and national titles like no other school has before, and they plan to do it again this year.
