Girls Basketball Experience Early Success
The girls basketball season is underway! Girls basketball tryouts were Nov. 8-10. Eighteen girls made it on the team and their season goes on until their final game against West Jordan on Feb. 17.
Leslie Lutali, a sophomore here at Bingham, says, “Before tryouts I was kind of nervous, but I felt prepared because of the workouts,” which they did during pre-season. She continued saying, “During tryouts we were warming up and stretching. We did defensive skills, free throws, and a lot of conditioning.”
Orem was their first opponent. They prepared through off-season workouts, tournaments, and dedication to improve as they practice. Bingham’s varsity team won 59-34, a great way to start off their season. Coach Beard says that he “feels great about this season” and that “the girls buy into the family atmosphere.”
Coach Beard has coaching in his blood with his dad coaching for over 40 years and his siblings being coaches as well. “I am a very competitive person, and love to win, but ultimately I coach to influence my team and staff for the better.” Beard continued saying, “You build amazing bonds and relationships and it’s so fun to have played a small part in helping these girls grow up and become amazing mothers, daughters, sisters, business women, and productive citizens. If they can say, ‘I played for Bingham’ with a smile and fond memories—that means a great deal to me.” It is clear that one of his priorities is to build players as people, not just to win a game.
Coach Beard wants to invite all students, faculty, and staff to our games. He states, “We want and need your support and love seeing you there cheering us on. Let’s get the Pit rocking every home game. Go Miners!”
