Do you have the tools you need to survive?
All a teenager would need is the basics to change a tire and a way to call for help. In an emergency your knowledge and tools can turn the worst possible situation into a minor inconvenience.
When asked about what the best tools for a teenager are, the owner of a popular tool review channel The Torque Test Channel said the following list.
– Picks, pry bars, locking pliers, pliers, hammers
– Chrome shallow and deep 1/4″ and 3/8″ socket sets
– Tire inflator
– Rechargeable worklight and flashlight
– Impact stubby/nano and deep 3/8″ and 1/2″ socket sets
– 1/4, 3/8″ and long 1/2″ ratchet
– 1/2″ breaker bar
– Funnels
– Torque wrench
– 1 plug in OBDII scanner/code reader
– Zip ties, duct tape
– 1/2″ high torque
– Jack, 4 jack stands
– Razors and scrapers
– 3/8″ mid torque or compact impact
– Die grinder, attachments
– Cut off tool, lots of discs
All of these tools should allow you to get out of any problems that you have, unless you need a specialty tool or parts. However they can only help you if you know how to use them.
Fortunately there are many ways you can learn to use them. One of the simplest ways would be to become youtube certified. In other words, watch a youtube video about what you need to learn. It has many advantages and disadvantages mainly because it is just a google search away, but there may not be a video for your exact problem or the information is wrong. A different way is to learn from others who are more experienced like a friend or family members., like learning from your dad how to change a tire. This one is one of the better ways to learn because you can easily ask questions and learn in a way that helps you. Then there is the most expensive way and that is to get some kind of education in it. A great example is taking the auto classes in Bingham’s autoshop. These classes are really good at teaching you basic stuff, like how to change a tire or do a head gasket on a small engine. And if you need to learn more, there are more classes that can teach stuff like tuning engines or diagnosing electrical problems. It is a great method to learn, but the more you learn the more expensive courses get, going from $20 to several thousand dollars for a college education.
There are many great ways to learn with varying levels of commitment and cost. The fact of the matter is that the more tools you have and the more you know how to use and abuse those tools, the more situations you can get yourself out of without needing to call for help or go through a desert on a horse with no name. Though it will be hard to learn and fix stuff, it’s important to remember what John Tremayne says;¨Sometimes, a man must take a break and sharpen his saw before he can cut a board.¨ That way you can keep honing your skills until you can complete what you need to without becoming disheartened.
