The crowd cheers as the student nears the end of the race, but what is Bingham’s swim team? Who runs it, how good are we, and when are their games?
The Bingham swim team has worked very hard to be where they are now. Including the long drive to kearns to practice at 5 am then to school and weight training or a long drive back to kearns for afterschool practice almost every day. All of this training just to practice has worked well and is why we are “roughly ranked a close first or second” said Aubrie Johnson, the swim team coach.
The swim team works hard to win region and get into state. If they work hard in the lead up to region then they will rank higher in the pre state rankings but it will not help them in region. They only serve to learn about the other teams, get yourself into state, and get into the other teams heads. Regionals is like state but mainly just for this district and is a big deal for bragging rights and it is achievable. It is achievable because we have won it before and it has less schools that are not as good, less schools with pools in it. State is the big boy competition which allows you to go to nationals. This means that the Bingham invitational on Nov 22, 2025 only matters for the state, not the region. Bingham invitational is a match lead and held by Bingham at kearns.
The main match Bingham works towards is Regionals. It is the one with the real competition in the district, unlike state. The winner is chosen by adding the points for the girls and the boys for each team. That means that if you had a team that was first place in boys with a large lead and a second in girls could win because they had a high enough score in the boys. The state is not as competitive for Bingham because there is more significant competition between more schools.
Bingham has been able to win regionals and placed high the past several years which is a big deal for our district. Though we have not won state as a whole for many years we have had people win specific strokes. Lincoln Hymas won the 6A state championship for the 200 Free and the 500 Free stroke last year which was a big win for Bingham. Though it is difficult to win state, it is also difficult to get the chance to compete because the competitor has to be in the top 32 of a stroke to be able to compete. The ranking for the different strokes comes from the matches before region.
Swimming is a very mind wracking sport. It requires many hours of practice and strong talent to score well and defeat the others who are trying to score above everyone else. While it may be confusing, the brain power behind all of it may make it more interesting for anyone watching. And all of the brain power is why the outlook for Bingham is looking good and that we will most likely do well in the regional competition.
