During the 1970s the entertainment industries started to became more daring and loose. The 1970s became a creative high point for United States film industry, and more genres of music were created during this time. The whole entertainment industry broadened to make room for the dozens of new ideas that forever shaped Hollywood. 

          Music in particular broadened the most. Music listeners had dozens of genres to choose from. According to retrowaste.com“Funk, Soul, R&B, Pop, Hard Rock, Soft Rock and Disco all carved out their place in the music world in the 1970s.” Singers and bands like Elton John, Queen, ABBA, the Eagles and Fleetwood Mac became really popular during this time according to Billboard. Billboard also said women in the 70s were reaching the top of the charts for the first time. About.com explains that the 70s are known for the dance music genre disco;however, what is not mentioned is that punk rock and jazz were also extremely popular during the 70s.  Particularly in Utah, rock was the most prominent genre of music in the 1970s and that’s what Utah teens listened to, according to The Salt Lake Tribune. 

         Also during this time the old style of film making died out and a new generation of film makers arose. “Restrictions on language, adult content and sexuality, and violence had loosened up, and these elements became more widespread” according to Filmsite.org. The hippie movement, civil rights movement, free love, the growth of rock and roll, changing gender roles and drug use certainly had an impact on the film industry according to filmsite.org. According to the Bingham Prospector 1976 issue, Jaws, The Other Side of the Mountain, Against a Crooked Sky, Human Factor, and Let’s Do it Again were popular movies of that time. Imdb.com lists popular movies like Rocky, King Kong, Carrie, Jaws and Star Wars that all came out during the 70s. Both Jaws and Star Wars were the first films to earn more than $100 million in rentals according to filmsite.org.
